About VOB files
VOB files hold the video on a DVD. They sit in the VIDEO_TS folder and contain MPEG-2 video with AC-3 or MP2 sound, split into parts of about 1 GB.
People convert VOB to MP4 to save home DVDs to a computer, phone or cloud drive. MP4 is much smaller than MPEG-2 and plays anywhere.
How we convert VOB to MP4
- Always re-encoded
- The MPEG-2 video is re-encoded to H.264 High profile at CRF 23, and the sound to AAC at 192 kbps.
- Resolution
- DVD resolution (for example 720x480 or 720x576) is kept. We do not upscale to HD.
- Size
- H.264 needs far fewer bits than MPEG-2, so a VOB part usually becomes a much smaller MP4.
Common problems and fixes
Only a few minutes of the movie converted.
A DVD title is split across several VOB files. Convert each VTS_xx_1, _2, _3 file, then join them with our video merger.
A commercial DVD does not convert.
Store-bought DVDs are usually copy protected. We only convert unprotected discs, such as home recordings.
The picture looks stretched.
DVD pixels are not square. Check the result in a player that respects the display aspect ratio, or set a resolution such as 720p.
About VOB to MP4 Conversion
VOB (Video Object) is the container format used on DVDs, storing video, audio, subtitles, and menus. While DVDs revolutionized home video, the format doesn't work on modern devices—smartphones, tablets, and streaming devices can't play VOB files. Converting VOB to MP4 preserves your DVD collection in a universally playable format.
The conversion transcodes DVD's MPEG-2 video to efficient H.264, typically producing smaller files with equivalent or better visual quality.
Why Convert VOB to MP4?
Modern devices don't play VOB. Smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming devices expect MP4. DVD content in VOB format is locked to DVD players and computers with DVD drives.
Portable media replaces physical discs. Convert your DVD collection to MP4 files on a hard drive or streaming server. No more disc swapping.
Smaller file sizes. DVD's MPEG-2 is inefficient by today's standards. H.264 conversion typically produces 50-70% smaller files at equivalent visual quality.
