AIF is Apple's uncompressed PCM audio format from 1988, storing big-endian audio in an IFF-derived container designed for professional use on classic Mac OS. WebM is Google's open media container format, introduced in 2010, using VP8/VP9 video and Vorbis/Opus audio within a Matroska-based structure. WebM is the standard open format for web video and audio.
Converting AIF to WebM wraps audio content in Google's web-optimized container. Since AIF contains only audio, the resulting WebM file will contain an Opus or Vorbis audio stream with no video track. WebM audio is natively supported in all modern browsers, making it ideal for web-based audio delivery.
WebM with Opus audio is the most efficient audio format supported natively by all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera). Opus delivers transparent quality at 128 kbps — lower than AAC or Vorbis at equivalent quality. For web applications, progressive web apps, and HTML5 audio, WebM/Opus is the optimal format.
Converting from AIF to WebM also bridges the gap between Apple's legacy ecosystem and modern web standards. AIF files cannot be played by any browser, while WebM/Opus plays everywhere. The lossless AIF source ensures the Opus encoder has the cleanest possible input for maximum efficiency.
FFmpeg decodes the AIF container's big-endian PCM stream and encodes it using the libopus encoder (preferred) or libvorbis within a WebM container. The WebM container is a restricted subset of Matroska (MKV) — only VP8/VP9/AV1 video and Vorbis/Opus audio are permitted. Opus uses SILK (for speech) and CELT (for music) layers with seamless switching, achieving remarkable efficiency from 6 kbps to 510 kbps. The output includes EBML headers and Ogg-encapsulated Opus frames in WebM clusters.
Opus at 128 kbps from the lossless AIF source produces quality that is perceptually transparent for most listeners — comparable to AAC at 192 kbps or Vorbis at 160 kbps. At 64 kbps, Opus delivers very good quality for speech and reasonable quality for music. Since AIF provides uncompressed PCM, the Opus encoder works from a perfect source with no pre-existing compression artifacts.
