- Older VP8 WebM files are slow to decode because no hardware decoder helps. Our test clip, 30 seconds of 1080p VP8, took about 239 seconds.
- Size
- The same test clip grew from 7.6 MB to 30.8 MB. Expect the MP4 to be larger than a tightly compressed WebM.
- Web playback
- The MP4 index is placed at the start of the file so it streams right away.
Common problems and fixes
The conversion takes several minutes.
That is normal for VP8 WebM files at 1080p. Trim the clip to the part you need, or choose 720p, to cut the time.
The MP4 is bigger than the WebM.
Pick the Low preset (CRF 28) or a lower resolution. WebM screen recordings are often very compact, and H.264 needs more bits for the same look.
A WebM screen recording will not open.
