The M4A container is technically an MP4 file with only audio streams, identified by the .m4a extension. Metadata tags are mapped from the MKV using FFmpeg's metadata handling, including title, artist, album, track number, and embedded cover art.
When stream-copying AAC from MKV, quality is identical to the source. When transcoding, AAC at 256 kbps in M4A is transparent for music, and 128 kbps is transparent for speech. The M4A container itself introduces no quality impact — it is purely a wrapper for the audio bitstream.
