MPEG Transport Stream recordings carry broadcast-quality audio encoded at high bitrates within error-resilient packet structures. Converting TS to AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) compresses the audio into the ultra-efficient narrowband codec designed for GSM cellular voice — producing files that are incredibly small at the cost of reduced audio bandwidth (300-3400 Hz frequency range).
AMR is the standard voice codec for GSM and 3G networks worldwide. Converting broadcast audio to AMR is useful when you need to create voice messages, phone system recordings, or ringtones from TV captures. AMR files are tiny — a minute of audio takes only about 100 KB at 12.2 kbps — making them ideal for extreme bandwidth constraints.
The converter demuxes the TS container, decodes the broadcast audio (MPEG-2 Audio or AC3) to PCM, resamples from 48 kHz to 8 kHz mono (AMR-NB requirement), and encodes using the AMR-NB codec at the selected bitrate mode (4.75-12.2 kbps). The output uses the .amr container with the standard AMR header (#!AMR\n). The dramatic sample rate reduction from 48 kHz stereo to 8 kHz mono accounts for most of the file size savings.
AMR-NB is a speech-optimized codec with a narrow 300-3400 Hz frequency band. Music, sound effects, and ambient audio will sound heavily degraded — like a phone call. Speech remains intelligible at all bitrate modes, but sounds noticeably compressed compared to the broadcast source. This format is purpose-built for voice, not music.
