About TS files
TS is the MPEG transport stream. TV tuners, set-top box recorders, IPTV captures and live stream downloads save video as TS, often with H.264 video and AAC or AC-3 sound.
Transport streams are made for broadcast, not for storage. Many phones and editors handle them badly, and seeking can be slow. MP4 is the better file to keep and share.
How we convert TS to MP4
- Fast path
- TS is in our copy-only set. When you change no option, the streams are moved into MP4 without re-encoding.
- Fallback
- If a stream cannot go into MP4, we re-encode to H.264 at CRF 23 with AAC sound at 192 kbps.
- Tracks
- All video and audio tracks are mapped, so extra audio languages are kept on the fast path.
Common problems and fixes
The MP4 starts with a few seconds of garbled picture.
Recordings that start mid-broadcast often begin between key frames. Trim the first seconds before converting.
The sound track is in the wrong language.
Broadcast TS files can carry several audio tracks. Your player can switch tracks in the MP4, since the fast path keeps them all.
The recording will not convert.
A recording cut off by a signal drop can be damaged. Try a shorter section or another copy.
About TS to MP4 Conversion
MPEG Transport Stream (TS) is the format used by DVRs, broadcast television, Blu-ray discs, and streaming captures. While perfect for transmission and recording, TS files don't play well on many devices and media players. Converting TS to MP4 creates universally compatible video from broadcast-quality sources.
The conversion typically remuxes H.264 or H.265 video directly to MP4 container without re-encoding—instant conversion with zero quality loss.
Why Convert TS to MP4?
Device compatibility improves dramatically. While TS is perfect for broadcast transmission, many media players, smartphones, and streaming devices struggle with Transport Stream format. MP4 plays everywhere.
Editing software prefers MP4. Video editors like Premiere, Final Cut, and DaVinci Resolve handle MP4 more reliably than TS.
Streaming and sharing require standard formats. Web platforms, social media, and streaming services expect MP4.
