About VOB to FLV Conversion

DVD VOB files use MPEG-2 video with AC3/DTS audio in the DVD program stream container. FLV (Flash Video) was Adobe's web video format, supporting H.264 or VP6 video with AAC or MP3 audio. Converting VOB to FLV makes DVD content compatible with legacy RTMP streaming servers and Flash-based platforms.

Why Convert VOB to FLV?

Legacy streaming servers (RTMP-based) and older content management systems built during the Flash era require FLV input. Converting DVD content to FLV enables uploading and streaming through these legacy platforms. Some video archival workflows also maintain FLV as a delivery format for historical consistency.

The conversion also downsizes DVD content for web delivery — MPEG-2 at DVD bitrates is far too large for the bandwidth constraints FLV was designed around.

Common Use Cases

  • Uploading DVD content to legacy CMS platforms that only accept FLV format
  • Preparing DVD video for RTMP streaming on older media server infrastructure
  • Converting DVD training materials for Flash-based e-learning systems
  • Archiving DVD content in FLV for legacy video library consistency
  • Creating web-sized clips from DVD sources for legacy streaming workflows

How It Works

FFmpeg demuxes the VOB, deinterlaces MPEG-2 using yadif, and transcodes to H.264 Baseline or Main Profile with AAC audio in the FLV container. DVD resolution (720x480/576) is maintained or downscaled. AC3/DTS surround is downmixed to stereo. The FLV tag structure provides timestamps for each audio and video packet.

Quality & Performance

H.264 in FLV at DVD resolution produces excellent quality — superior to the MPEG-2 source at similar bitrates. The deinterlacing removes combing artifacts. At 1-3 Mbps H.264, quality is good for web delivery.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Deinterlace with yadif before encoding — all FLV players expect progressive video
  • 2Use H.264 for the best quality in FLV, or VP6 only for Flash Player 6-8 compatibility
  • 3Downmix DVD surround audio to stereo AAC for web-appropriate FLV audio
  • 4Keep resolution at DVD native (480p) — FLV was designed for this resolution range
  • 5Add FLV metadata for proper duration and seek behavior in legacy players

VOB to FLV bridges DVD content into legacy streaming and web platforms, producing properly sized web video from disc-based MPEG-2 sources.

Často kladené otázky

FLV is the native RTMP container. The converted file can be ingested by RTMP servers for live-like streaming.
No. FLV has no subtitle support. Burn subtitles into the video frames during conversion if needed.
Not in browsers (Flash removed 2021). VLC, PotPlayer, and the Ruffle emulator play FLV files.
H.264 FLV at comparable quality is typically 50-70% smaller than MPEG-2 VOB.
Yes, when configured. DVD interlaced content is deinterlaced to progressive for FLV's progressive playback.
