AIF is Apple's uncompressed PCM audio format from 1988, storing big-endian audio in an IFF-derived container for professional use on classic Mac OS. WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video format, using the VC-1 or WMV codec family within an ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container. WMV was the dominant web video format during the Windows Media Player era of the early 2000s.
Converting AIF to WMV wraps audio content in a Windows video container. Since AIF contains only audio, the resulting WMV file will contain WMA audio with no video stream. This produces a valid ASF file with the .wmv extension that Windows Media Player will handle as audio, though the video container is unconventional for audio-only content.
Some legacy Windows Media Services deployments and enterprise content management systems accept only WMV files for all media assets — including audio-only content. Converting AIF to WMV ensures compatibility with these systems without requiring infrastructure changes. Corporate intranets, training systems, and kiosk installations from the Windows Media era may mandate WMV format.
The ASF container shared by WMV also supports DRM (Digital Rights Management) through Windows Media DRM, which was widely used for commercial content protection. If your workflow requires DRM-protected audio delivery on Windows platforms, the WMV/ASF container provides the necessary infrastructure.
FFmpeg reads the AIF container's big-endian PCM audio stream and encodes it as WMA (wmav2) within an ASF container with the .wmv extension. Since there is no video source, no video stream is generated — the output is audio-only in a video container. The ASF container adds header objects (including content description for metadata), data packets, and a simple index for seeking. The WMA encoder compresses the PCM audio using modified DCT with configurable bitrate.
Quality depends on the WMA encoding bitrate. At 192 kbps, WMA delivers decent quality from the lossless AIF source. At 128 kbps, quality is acceptable for speech and casual listening. The ASF/WMV container introduces no additional quality degradation. Since AIF provides clean uncompressed PCM, the WMA encoder has the best possible starting point.

AIF to WMV wraps Apple's uncompressed audio in Microsoft's video container. The result is audio-only in a WMV/ASF file, primarily useful for legacy Windows Media infrastructure. For modern use, MP4 or WebM are universally better choices.
