FFmpeg demuxes the professional codec from the MXF container and re-encodes to WMV (VC-1) with WMA audio in the ASF container. The pipeline: `-c:v wmv2 -b:v 5M -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k`. FFmpeg's WMV encoder (wmv2) provides WMV8 quality, which is adequate for most legacy systems. For higher-quality VC-1 encoding (WMV9/VC-1 Advanced Profile), Windows-native tools provide better results. Broadcast MXF content should be deinterlaced before WMV encoding for progressive playback on Windows systems.
WMV/VC-1 is a capable codec — Microsoft's VC-1 Advanced Profile was considered competitive with H.264 Baseline at the time of its development. At equivalent bitrates, modern H.264 outperforms WMV slightly, but WMV at 5-10 Mbps produces good quality for 1080p content from broadcast MXF sources. FFmpeg's wmv2 encoder is limited to WMV8, which is less efficient than VC-1; for maximum WMV quality, Windows-native encoding tools are preferred.
