What Pocket 3 Captures
The DJI Pocket 3 is a 1-inch sensor gimbal-stabilized camera designed for vloggers. It records 4K at up to 120 fps in H.264 or H.265, with two color profiles:
- Normal: contrasty, ready-to-share, "video" look
- D-Log M: flatter, more dynamic range, requires grading
The Pocket 3 also has a "10-bit Rec.709" mode and HLG mode for HDR delivery. For most vlog work: Normal mode plays directly to YouTube. For higher-quality work where grading time is acceptable: D-Log M.
This post covers the export workflow for both modes, the LUT setup for D-Log M, and the file transfer quirks specific to the Pocket 3. For broader DJI workflow context, see DJI D-Log to Rec.709.
File Format Specifics
| Mode | Codec | Bitrate (4K30) | Color Sampling | Bit Depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal H.264 | H.264 | 100 Mbps | 4:2:0 | 8-bit |
| Normal H.265 | H.265 | 100 Mbps | 4:2:0 | 10-bit |
| D-Log M | H.265 | 100 Mbps | 4:2:0 | 10-bit |
| HLG | H.265 | 100 Mbps | 4:2:0 | 10-bit |
| 4K 120p | H.265 | 130 Mbps | 4:2:0 | 10-bit |
The 10-bit color depth in D-Log M is the production advantage. 8-bit is sufficient for direct delivery; 10-bit gives grading headroom.
Direct Upload Workflow (Normal Mode)
For YouTube/social vlogs without color grading:
- Record in Normal H.264 or H.265
- Transfer files to computer (see Transfer section below)
- Edit in any NLE
- Export to MP4 H.264 at YouTube specs
YouTube specs for vlogs:
| Resolution | Bitrate | Frame Rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 12-25 Mbps | 30 or 60 |
| 4K | 35-50 Mbps | 30 or 60 |
For vertical content (TikTok, Reels), see TikTok and YouTube Shorts Export Settings.
Transfer Methods
The Pocket 3 connects via USB-C. Three transfer options:
Option 1: Direct USB (fastest)
- Connect Pocket 3 to computer via USB-C cable
- Power on, set to "Storage Mode" in camera menu
- Mac/Windows: appears as drive
- Copy files
This is the fastest. USB 3.2 sustained transfer of 4K H.265 footage runs at 200-300 MB/s.
Option 2: Built-in WiFi (slow)
DJI Mimo app (iOS/Android) connects via WiFi to the Pocket 3. Browse files, transfer to phone. Then transfer from phone to computer. Slow (50 MB/s WiFi) and lossy if you accept the app's compression.
Option 3: SD card (no card)
Pocket 3 has internal storage only. No SD card slot. So this isn't an option. Built-in 32 or 256 GB internal storage.
For most workflows: USB direct. Mimo app is for quick previews on the road.
D-Log M Grading Workflow
D-Log M is DJI's flat color profile optimized for the Pocket 3's sensor. It captures roughly 13 stops of dynamic range vs Normal's 7-8 stops. The trade-off: footage looks flat without grading.
Three ways to grade:
Method 1: DJI's official LUT (fastest)
DJI publishes free LUTs at dji.com/downloads:
D-Log M to Rec.709 v1.cube(709 LUT)D-Log M to BT.2020 v1.cube(HDR)
Apply in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or Final Cut Pro:
In DaVinci:
- Color page > LUT panel > load DJI's LUT
- Apply to clip
- Tweak before/after the LUT
In Premiere:
- Lumetri Color > Basic Correction > Input LUT > load DJI's LUT
- Adjust further with Lumetri's Curves and Color Wheels
Method 2: Manual grading
- Lift shadows (D-Log M has crushed shadows)
- Compress highlights
- Add saturation (typically 110-120%)
- Apply contrast curve
- Refine skin tones with hue rotation
Manual grading takes longer per clip but gives finer control.
Method 3: ACES workflow
For multi-camera shoots:
- Project Settings > Color Management > ACEScct
- Set IDT per clip: DJI D-Log M (specific to Pocket 3 if available, or DJI D-Log)
- ODT: Rec.709 for SDR delivery
- Grade in ACES space; output is automatic
For ACES details, see ACES Color Pipeline.
Export Settings
For YouTube delivery:
Codec: H.264
Profile: high
Pixel Format: yuv420p
Frame Rate: match source (30 or 60)
Bitrate: 25-35 Mbps (1080p), 50-70 Mbps (4K)
Audio: AAC 192 kbps stereo, 48 kHz
For TikTok/Reels delivery (vertical):
Resolution: 1080×1920 (vertical)
Codec: H.264
Bitrate: 16-22 Mbps
Audio: AAC 128 kbps stereo
For high-quality master:
Codec: ProRes 422 HQ or H.265 with CRF 18
Resolution: source resolution
Audio: PCM 24-bit (uncompressed) or AAC 256 kbps
For our video compressor, the export settings produce files matching these specs.
Audio Considerations
The Pocket 3 has built-in stereo microphones with reasonable quality. For better audio:
Built-in mic improvements:
- Reduce wind noise: Camera Settings > Audio > Wind Reduction (good for outdoor)
- Set audio level manually for consistent volume
- Reduce gain in noisy environments
External mic:
- USB-C external microphones (Rode VideoMic NTG, DJI Mic 2 wireless)
- Improves clarity and reduces wind noise dramatically
- Especially useful for talking-head vlogs
For audio mastering after recording, see Audacity Export Settings.
Stabilization
The Pocket 3's gimbal handles 95% of stabilization. For very smooth final output:
- Camera mode: ActiveTrack 6.0 for moving subjects
- RockSteady 3.0+ for handheld walking
- Post-processing stabilization (DaVinci, Premiere) for residual jitter
The stabilization is bake-in to recording. There's no "raw shaky" footage to recover. Whatever the gimbal produced is what you have.
Pro Tip: When walking with the Pocket 3, use the wrist-strap loop and let it dangle naturally. The gimbal compensates for normal arm motion. Holding stiffly causes more visible jitter than relaxed grip.
Common Issues
Footage looks flat in playback: D-Log M without LUT. Apply DJI's LUT in your editor.
Color shift after upload to YouTube: missing color metadata in encode. Force Rec.709 in FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 \
-c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 18 \
-color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709 \
-pix_fmt yuv420p \
-c:a aac -b:a 192k \
-movflags +faststart \
output.mp4
Audio quiet or unclear: built-in mic noisy in some environments. Use external mic. Apply gentle compression in post (3-4 dB GR) and EQ to enhance vocals.
4K 120p file won't open in editor: requires HEVC decoder. macOS Ventura+ or Windows 11 with HEVC codec works. For older systems, transcode to H.264 first via our HEVC to H.264 converter.
Storage fills quickly: 4K 120p is ~6.5 GB per minute. The Pocket 3's 32 GB internal storage holds about 5 minutes. Use the 256 GB version for longer shoots.
Pocket 3 vs Action Camera
For vlogger workflows, Pocket 3 vs GoPro Hero or Insta360:
| Aspect | DJI Pocket 3 | GoPro Hero | Insta360 X4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensor size | 1-inch | 1/1.9 inch | 1/2 inch |
| Image quality | Better in low light | Action-camera typical | Surprisingly good for size |
| Stabilization | Hardware gimbal | Hypersmooth digital | FlowState digital |
| Vlog ergonomics | Excellent (gimbal + screen) | Awkward without grip | Limited |
| Battery | 165 minutes recording | 105 minutes | 120 minutes |
| Audio | Decent | Poor without external | Decent |
For vlogging specifically: Pocket 3 wins on image quality and ergonomics. For action sports: GoPro. For 360 capture: Insta360.
For 360-specific workflow, see Insta360 X4 Files.
