F4V stores H.264 video and AAC audio in Adobe's Flash container. OGG is the open-source audio container from Xiph.org, typically holding Vorbis-encoded audio. Vorbis delivers quality comparable to AAC and MP3 at similar bitrates but is completely patent-free and open-source. Converting F4V to OGG extracts audio from Flash video and produces a freely-licensed audio file ideal for open-source platforms and Linux ecosystems.
OGG Vorbis is the preferred audio format for open-source software, Linux distributions, and platforms that avoid patent-encumbered codecs. Firefox, Chromium, and all Linux media players support OGG natively. It is also Spotify's internal streaming format. Converting F4V to OGG is particularly useful for free software projects, game development (OGG is the standard audio format for many game engines), and Linux-centric workflows.
FFmpeg decodes the AAC audio from the F4V container and re-encodes it using the libvorbis encoder at a configurable quality level (VBR quality 0-10, default 5, roughly 160 kbps). The Vorbis encoder uses modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) with psychoacoustic modeling. Output is wrapped in an OGG container with Vorbis comment metadata. The encoder supports sample rates up to 192 kHz and up to 255 channels, though stereo at 44.1 or 48 kHz is standard.
At Vorbis quality 5 (~160 kbps), audio quality is comparable to 192 kbps MP3 — transparent for most content. Quality 6-7 (~192-224 kbps) approaches AAC 256 kbps. Since the source is AAC from F4V, some theoretical quality loss occurs from transcoding between lossy formats, but at moderate-to-high bitrates this is imperceptible.
