WebP (Google's modern format) and JPEG (the universal photo standard) are both lossy formats designed for photographic content, but they target different eras of the web. WebP achieves 25-34% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality thanks to its VP8 encoding. Converting WebP to JPEG moves images from the modern web format to the universally accepted photo standard that works everywhere — including older devices, software, and platforms that do not recognize WebP.
This conversion is one of the most common image operations because WebP adoption, while growing rapidly, is not yet universal. Print services, desktop applications, photo editing software, and some mobile apps still expect JPEG. When you download a WebP image from a website and need to use it elsewhere, JPEG conversion provides universal compatibility.
JPEG is the universal photo format accepted by every device, platform, and application in existence. Despite WebP's technical superiority, many services do not accept WebP: print-on-demand providers, real estate listing platforms, legacy photo editors, some social media upload interfaces, and numerous specialized industry applications.
Photo sharing and printing workflows standardize on JPEG. Sending a WebP to a non-technical person often causes confusion — their device may not have a WebP viewer, or their photo printing service may reject it. JPEG eliminates these compatibility barriers. The 25-34% file size increase compared to WebP is a worthwhile trade for universal compatibility.
Sharp decodes the WebP's VP8 (lossy) or VP8L (lossless) compressed data, composites any alpha transparency against a configurable background (white by default), then encodes using JPEG's DCT compression at the specified quality level (default 85). Chroma subsampling defaults to 4:2:0. For lossy WebP sources, this is a transcoding operation — the VP8 artifacts in the source may interact with JPEG's DCT compression, potentially compounding artifacts at low quality settings.
For lossless WebP sources, the JPEG output represents a single-generation lossy compression step at the specified quality — equivalent to compressing a raw image. For lossy WebP sources, the conversion is a transcode: VP8 artifacts in the source are recompressed by JPEG's DCT algorithm. At quality 85+, the compound artifacts are imperceptible for photographic content. At lower quality settings, the interaction between VP8 and DCT artifacts may produce more visible degradation than a fresh JPEG encode from an uncompressed source.
