M1V is the MPEG-1 Video elementary stream — a bare video bitstream from the foundational 1993 MPEG-1 standard, stored without any container structure, audio, or metadata. MOV is Apple's QuickTime multimedia container, the native video format for macOS, iOS, and Apple's professional video production tools (Final Cut Pro, Motion, Compressor). MOV supports a wide range of codecs including Apple ProRes, H.264, HEVC, and legacy MPEG-1.
Converting M1V to MOV brings raw MPEG-1 elementary streams into Apple's professional video ecosystem, adding the QuickTime atom structure needed for editing, playback, and further processing on macOS.
MOV is the required format for Apple's video production pipeline. Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and Motion all handle MOV natively with full timeline scrubbing, thumbnail generation, and frame-accurate editing. Raw M1V files are unrecognized by these applications. Converting to MOV makes the content editable in Apple's entire creative suite.
MOV also provides the atom-based metadata structure that enables quick opening, accurate seeking, and Spotlight indexing on macOS. A raw M1V shows no preview, no duration, and no thumbnail in Finder — a MOV file provides all of these.
FFmpeg reads the M1V elementary stream and wraps it in the QuickTime MOV container. Stream copy preserves the MPEG-1 bitstream with zero quality loss, adding the moov atom with timescale, sample tables, and edit lists. For Apple ecosystem optimization, re-encoding to H.264 or Apple ProRes provides better compatibility and editing performance. ProRes is preferred for editing (constant quality, intra-frame only), while H.264 is better for delivery. No audio is included unless an external source is provided.
Stream copy preserves original MPEG-1 quality perfectly. Re-encoding to ProRes 422 dramatically increases file size but provides the best editing experience (no decoding overhead during scrubbing). H.264 at CRF 18 provides excellent visual quality at much smaller file sizes. The optimal choice depends on whether the MOV is for editing (ProRes) or delivery (H.264).
