Sony's PlayStation Portable supports only H.264 Baseline profile video at specific resolutions (up to 480x272 natively, 720x480 on later firmware) with AAC-LC audio in MP4 containers. MTS files from AVCHD camcorders — ironically often from Sony's own Handycam line — use MPEG-2 Transport Stream with interlaced H.264 that the PSP cannot play. PSP Video conversion downscales and re-encodes to the PSP's strict requirements.
Despite both MTS and PSP originating from Sony, the PSP's 2004-era hardware cannot decode AVCHD's 1080i H.264 Main/High profile video or AC3 audio. The PSP's MIPS-based CPU has a fixed-function video decoder that only handles Baseline profile with CAVLC entropy coding at limited resolutions and bitrates. Any deviation causes an 'unsupported data' error.
PSP owners who want to watch their camcorder recordings on Sony's handheld need to convert MTS to the PSP's exact specifications. The PSP's 480x272 widescreen display is well-suited for viewing home videos, and with proper conversion, camcorder footage looks surprisingly good on the small screen.
FFmpeg deinterlaces, downscales, and encodes: `-vf yadif,scale=480:272 -c:v libx264 -profile:v baseline -level 2.1 -b:v 768k -maxrate 768k -bufsize 1536k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 48000 -ac 2 -f psp`. The PSP requires Baseline profile with CAVLC entropy coding. Files must be named M4Vxxxxx.mp4 and placed in MP_ROOT/100MNV01/.
Downscaling from 1080i to 480x272 (a 16x reduction in pixel count) obviously reduces detail, but the PSP's small 4.3-inch screen makes this less noticeable than you might expect. The 768 kbps H.264 Baseline encoding delivers clean, watchable video at the PSP's native resolution. Colors and motion remain smooth.

MTS to PSP Video conversion resolves the ironic incompatibility between Sony's HD camcorders and Sony's portable console, producing properly formatted files for the PSP's specific hardware decoder.
