OGV and OGG are both containers from Xiph.org's Ogg family. OGV holds video (Theora) and audio (Vorbis) streams, while OGG is conventionally used for audio-only content (Vorbis). Converting OGV to OGG strips the video track and outputs the Vorbis audio in a pure audio Ogg container — the standard extension for Vorbis audio files.
Extracting the audio track from an OGV video produces a standard OGG Vorbis audio file — the format expected by game engines (Unity, Godot), Linux media players, and open-source audio tools. This is the most natural audio extraction path since both formats use the Ogg framing system.
Since OGV's audio is already Vorbis, the extraction can be a stream copy — no re-encoding needed — producing an output bit-identical to the original audio track.
FFmpeg reads the OGV container, identifies the Vorbis audio stream, and copies it directly into a new OGG container using -c:a copy. This is a stream copy operation — no decoding or re-encoding occurs. The Vorbis packets are simply extracted from the multiplexed OGV and re-wrapped in audio-only OGG framing. Metadata from Vorbis comments is preserved.
Stream copy means zero quality loss — the audio bitstream in the OGG output is bit-identical to the audio track in the OGV source. The extraction is mathematically perfect with no generation loss whatsoever.
