The iPod Audio preset converts MP3 files for optimal playback on Apple iPods — from the classic click-wheel iPod to iPod nano, shuffle, and touch models. While iPods play MP3 natively, the AAC codec delivers better quality at lower bitrates, which mattered greatly on devices with 1-160 GB storage where every megabyte counted. Apple designed the entire iPod audio pipeline around AAC, making it the most efficient codec on these devices.
The preset produces AAC-LC at 192 kbps in M4A, balancing quality against the storage constraints that defined the iPod era. This is the sweet spot Apple identified for portable audio — high enough for excellent quality on in-ear headphones, low enough to fit thousands of songs on limited flash or hard drive storage.
iPod storage was always the primary constraint. A 4 GB iPod nano holds roughly 1,000 songs at 128 kbps MP3, but AAC at 128 kbps sounds noticeably better, effectively giving you free quality improvement with no storage penalty. At 192 kbps AAC, you get quality comparable to 256 kbps MP3 — fitting more high-quality music on the same device.
iTunes was built around AAC from the beginning. The iTunes Store sold exclusively in AAC format, and iTunes' library management, smart playlists, and sync engine all work most reliably with M4A files. If you are still maintaining an iPod and syncing through iTunes, converting your MP3 library to AAC aligns with Apple's intended workflow and ensures metadata consistency.
The iPod Audio preset encodes to AAC-LC at 192 kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo in an M4A container. AAC-LC is supported by all iPod models ever manufactured. The 192 kbps bitrate provides excellent quality for headphone and earbud listening while maintaining reasonable file sizes for devices with 1-160 GB storage. M4A metadata is fully compatible with iTunes library management.
At 192 kbps AAC, audio quality exceeds that of 192 kbps MP3 and approaches 256 kbps MP3 in listening tests. For headphone listening (the primary iPod use case), 192 kbps AAC is perceptually transparent for virtually all music genres. The generation loss from MP3-to-AAC transcoding is negligible at this bitrate.
