WMA is Microsoft's audio codec in the ASF container. AVI (Audio Video Interleave), also a Microsoft RIFF-based container from 1992, interleaves audio and video data in alternating chunks. Both are Microsoft formats from different eras.

FFmpeg decodes the WMA stream from ASF and encodes to MP3 or PCM within an AVI RIFF container. AVI uses a simple index for seeking and interleaves audio chunks throughout the file. Since WMA cannot be stored directly in AVI, transcoding to MP3 or PCM is required.
