The iPad Video preset standardizes the encoding to H.264 Main Profile Level 4.0 at 1080p with iPad-optimized bitrate and buffer settings, guaranteeing smooth hardware-accelerated playback across all iPad generations from iPad Air onward.
FFmpeg transcodes the M4V to H.264 Main Profile Level 4.0 at 1920x1080, using a bitrate of 5-8 Mbps which is optimal for the iPad Retina display. Audio is encoded as AAC-LC at 160 kbps stereo. The output is a standard MP4 with the moov atom placed at the beginning (faststart) for instant playback. The encoding uses 2 reference frames and CABAC entropy coding, which iPad hardware decoders handle efficiently.
At 1080p with 5-8 Mbps, the output looks excellent on iPad screens up to 12.9 inches. The Retina display resolves fine detail well, and the bitrate is sufficient for complex scenes. If the original M4V was 4K, the downscale to 1080p loses some detail but is imperceptible at normal iPad viewing distances (12-18 inches).
