The Android Video preset converts video to H.264 at 720p with AAC audio in an MP4 container, tuned for the hardware decoders built into Android smartphones and tablets. 3GPP files originate from GSM-era phones and typically use H.263 video with AMR audio at very low resolutions. While Android can technically play 3GPP files natively, converting to the Android Video preset ensures modern hardware-accelerated decoding and optimal performance.
Even though Android supports 3GPP playback, the experience on modern devices is suboptimal. H.263 video does not benefit from hardware acceleration on most recent Android chipsets (Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek Dimensity, Samsung Exynos), resulting in software decoding that uses more CPU and battery. The MP4/H.264 output from this preset taps into dedicated hardware decoders for effortless playback.
The Android Video preset also normalizes the container and metadata to what Android's media scanner expects. This means proper thumbnails in gallery apps, correct duration display, and seamless integration with Google Photos backup and sharing features.
FFmpeg decodes the 3GPP source (H.263/H.264 video, AMR/AAC audio) and re-encodes to H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC LC audio in an MP4 container. Resolution scales up to 720p or maintains the source dimensions if smaller. The faststart flag places the moov atom at the file beginning for immediate playback in Android media players.
Quality is bounded by the 3GPP source. The typical GSM phone recording at 176x144 or 352x288 will not gain visual detail from re-encoding — the H.264 output preserves the source quality in a more efficiently decoded format. AAC audio at 128 kbps will sound cleaner than AMR but retains the narrowband character of the original.

The Android Video preset modernizes 3GPP recordings for today's Android devices. The hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding and proper MP4 metadata make for a noticeably better viewing experience than playing raw 3GPP files.
