How It Works
Sharp decodes the AVIF source using its AV1 decoder, producing a full-color pixel buffer. The image is then quantized to a 256-color palette using the libimagequant library integrated into Sharp's pipeline. Floyd-Steinberg dithering is applied by default to simulate smooth gradients within the palette constraint. The indexed pixels and palette are written as a GIF89a file. If the source AVIF has transparency, one palette entry is reserved for fully transparent pixels.

The color reduction from millions of colors to 256 is the primary quality concern. Photographic images with smooth gradients will show visible banding even with dithering applied. Graphics with flat colors and limited palettes convert much more cleanly. The spatial resolution is fully preserved — only color depth is affected.
