About CAF to FLAC Conversion

CAF (Core Audio Format) is Apple's professional container with unlimited codec support, no file size cap, and rich production metadata. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is the universal open-source lossless standard, supported on Android, Linux, Windows 10+, and every major music platform.

Converting CAF to FLAC extracts the audio, decodes to PCM, and encodes losslessly. From PCM or ALAC in CAF, this is a perfectly lossless operation. FLAC provides cross-platform lossless compatibility that CAF lacks.

Why Convert CAF to FLAC?

CAF is macOS-specific with virtually no support outside Apple's Core Audio framework. FLAC is supported everywhere — Android, Linux, Windows, Plex, Roon, Jellyfin, Bandcamp, Tidal, and Qobuz. Converting CAF to FLAC makes professional macOS recordings accessible on all platforms.

FLAC's Vorbis comment metadata system supports unlimited tagging, ReplayGain, embedded album art, and cue sheets. For distributing professional recordings outside the Apple ecosystem, FLAC is the universal lossless choice.

Common Use Cases

  • Making Logic Pro recordings available on Android and Windows platforms
  • Preparing CAF masters for Bandcamp, Tidal, or other lossless distribution
  • Converting macOS production audio for cross-platform music server libraries
  • Creating universally compatible lossless archives from professional CAF sessions
  • Migrating macOS audio to the open-source FLAC ecosystem

How It Works

FFmpeg reads the CAF container, decodes the enclosed audio to PCM, and encodes using the FLAC encoder with configurable compression levels 0-8. From PCM or ALAC in CAF, the entire pipeline is lossless. FLAC stores an MD5 checksum for integrity verification. The output preserves sample rate, bit depth, and channel layout. CAF metadata does not transfer directly but basic information can be added as Vorbis comments.

Quality & Performance

From PCM or ALAC in CAF, the conversion is perfectly lossless — every sample is preserved. From lossy codecs in CAF, FLAC preserves the full decoded quality. FLAC compression levels affect only speed and size, never quality. Files are typically 50-60% of raw PCM size.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Verify lossless integrity from PCM sources by comparing decoded MD5 checksums
  • 2Use compression level 5 for the best speed/size balance
  • 3Add Vorbis comments (metadata) during conversion since CAF metadata does not transfer automatically
  • 4Embed album art in FLAC for proper display across music players
  • 5Batch convert CAF sessions when preparing cross-platform distribution from macOS production

자주 묻는 질문

Yes. PCM to FLAC is mathematically lossless. Every sample is preserved exactly.
Level 5 (default) for optimal balance. All levels produce identical audio quality.
iOS 11+ supports FLAC in the Files app. For full Apple integration, ALAC in M4A is preferred.
CAF-specific markers and regions do not transfer. Basic information must be manually added as Vorbis comments in FLAC.
FLAC is 50-60% of raw PCM size. Similar to ALAC compression ratios.
