The PSP Video preset creates H.264 Baseline Profile at 480x272 (the PSP's native screen resolution) with AAC audio at 96 kbps. DivX movies were hugely popular for PSP homebrew media playback in the 2000s, but the PSP's official video player does not support DivX AVI files. The PSP's hardware video decoder supports H.264 and MPEG-4 SP in MP4 containers — not DivX/XviD in AVI. While custom firmware enabled DivX playback on modified PSPs, official firmware requires H.264 MP4. The PSP preset encodes at the exact screen resolution (480x272) for pixel-perfect display with minimal decoder workload and battery drain.
The MPEG-4 Part 2 video from DivX is decoded and re-encoded to H.264 Baseline Profile Level 2.1 at 480x272 with a maximum bitrate of 768 kbps. Audio is transcoded to AAC-LC at 96 kbps stereo with 48 kHz sample rate. The MP4 container is formatted with specific atom ordering for PSP firmware compatibility. Files should be named M4Vxxxxx.MP4 and placed in MP_ROOT/100MNV01 for thumbnail support.
At 480x272 on the PSP's 4.3-inch screen, 768 kbps H.264 looks excellent. Since most DivX content was 480p, the downscale to 272p is significant, but the PSP's small screen makes this acceptable. The H.264 codec produces cleaner results than what DivX could achieve at 768 kbps.
