About ODT to DOC Conversion

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is an open ISO standard (ISO 26300) word processing format used natively by LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and other open-source office suites. DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary format (1997-2003) built on the OLE2 compound document structure. Converting ODT to DOC translates an open-standard document into the older Microsoft format for compatibility with systems that predate modern office software.

The conversion maps ODT's XML-based ODF elements to DOC's binary formatting records: <text:p> paragraphs become Word paragraph sprms, <table:table> elements become binary table definitions, and ODF style attributes are translated to their closest DOC equivalents. The resulting DOC file opens in every version of Microsoft Word ever released.

Why Convert ODT to DOC?

Some legacy systems — court filing portals, government forms, legacy ERP document modules — specifically require DOC format and will not accept ODT. If you create documents in LibreOffice using ODT but must submit to one of these systems, DOC conversion is necessary. These systems were built before ODT existed and have not been updated to accept open formats.

DOC is also the safe choice when you are unsure what version of Word the recipient uses. While all modern Word versions support ODT, older versions (2003 and earlier, or 2007 without service packs) cannot open ODT files. DOC opens everywhere without compatibility packs or plugin installations.

Common Use Cases

  • Submit LibreOffice documents to systems that only accept DOC format
  • Share ODT documents with recipients running old versions of Microsoft Word
  • Provide DOC versions of open-format documents for maximum compatibility
  • Convert ODT files for upload to legacy document management systems
  • Ensure documents open without compatibility warnings on any Word version

How It Works

LibreOffice opens the ODT ZIP archive, parsing content.xml for body text, styles.xml for formatting, and extracting images from the Pictures/ directory. The document model is serialized to DOC binary format: ODF paragraph styles map to Word paragraph sprms (single property modifiers), character formatting becomes character sprms, and <table:table> structures are written as binary table definitions. ODF page styles (margins, orientation, headers, footers) are mapped to Word section properties. The output is an OLE2 compound file compatible with Word 97 through the latest version.

Quality & Performance

Standard formatting converts reliably: fonts, sizes, colors, bold, italic, underline, paragraph alignment, line spacing, indentation, tables, images, headers, footers, lists, and footnotes. ODF-specific features without DOC equivalents — certain list continuation behaviors, ODF drawing shapes, and some metadata fields — may simplify. Track changes and comments are preserved in most cases. For typical business documents, the conversion is high-fidelity.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Keep the original ODT file as your master copy — DOC should be used only for submission to legacy systems
  • 2Test the DOC output in the actual target system to verify acceptance and formatting
  • 3Remove ODT-specific features (certain drawing objects, advanced list styles) before converting for cleaner output
  • 4Check tables and images after conversion — these are the most common areas for minor formatting differences
  • 5For modern recipients, convert to DOCX instead of DOC for better feature preservation

자주 묻는 질문

Standard formatting — fonts, styles, tables, images, lists, headers, footers — converts accurately. ODT-specific features without DOC equivalents may simplify or be omitted.
DOC is necessary when the recipient or system requires the legacy Word 97-2003 format. For modern compatibility, DOCX is preferred.
Usually yes. ODT uses ZIP compression while DOC stores data in an uncompressed binary format. Expect the DOC to be 50-100% larger for text-heavy documents.
No. ODT macros (StarBasic or Python) cannot be converted to DOC's VBA macro format. They must be rewritten.
Yes, but any features lost in the ODT-to-DOC conversion cannot be recovered. Keep the original ODT as your primary copy.
