PPM (Portable Pixmap) is the Netpbm toolkit's simple raster format used in scientific computing and image processing. PDF (Portable Document Format) is the universal standard for document distribution. The PPM file is parsed and the RGB pixel data is embedded within a PDF page. The image can use lossless compression (for exact pixel preservation) or JPEG compression (for smaller file sizes). Page dimensions are calculated from the PPM image dimensions and a specified DPI. 16-bit PPM data is scaled to 8-bit for PDF embedding. ImageMagick handles both the PPM decoding and PDF generation with proper page structure and image placement.
With lossless compression, the PDF contains a pixel-perfect representation of the PPM data (at 8-bit precision). With JPEG compression within the PDF, standard JPEG quality characteristics apply. For scientific results where exact pixel values matter, lossless mode is essential.
