Converting 14-bit Nikon sensor data to 256-color GIF is an extreme quality reduction. Smooth gradients show visible banding and dithering. Fine color distinctions collapse. This is appropriate only when color fidelity is unimportant. For web output preserving photographic quality, use JPEG or WebP.
