WTV (Windows TV) is the Windows Media Center DVR recording format, and Xbox is Microsoft's gaming console line — both part of the Microsoft ecosystem. The Xbox Video device preset is a pre-configured FFmpeg profile targeting Xbox consoles (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S), producing H.264 High Profile video with AAC-LC audio at up to 1080p resolution, optimized for the Xbox's hardware video decoder and TV-connected display.

Since both WTV and Xbox originate from Microsoft, this conversion keeps content within the same ecosystem. Windows Media Center was even designed to integrate with Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender, though that functionality has been removed. Converting WTV to the Xbox preset restores the ability to watch TV recordings on Xbox, albeit through a different playback path.

Modern Xbox consoles (Xbox One and Series X|S) cannot play WTV files — Microsoft removed WTV support when they discontinued Windows Media Center. The Xbox Video preset produces MP4 files that play in the Xbox media player app, whether loaded from USB, streamed from a local network, or accessed through DLNA/UPnP media servers.

The Xbox preset uses H.264 High Profile for maximum compression efficiency, taking advantage of the Xbox's capable hardware decoder. This profile produces excellent quality at moderate file sizes, suitable for playback on large TV screens where quality is more critical than on mobile devices.

FFmpeg demuxes the WTV container and encodes for Xbox compatibility. The preset uses H.264 High Profile Level 4.1 at up to 1080p with AAC-LC 5.1 or stereo audio at 192 kbps. Video bitrate targets 6-10 Mbps for HD content and 3-5 Mbps for SD. Interlaced 1080i WTV sources are deinterlaced with yadif for progressive output. The MP4 container uses faststart for USB and streaming compatibility. AC3 5.1 audio can optionally be preserved as-is since Xbox supports AC3 passthrough to AV receivers.
