MOV (QuickTime Movie) is Apple's proprietary container, while MKV (Matroska Video) is an open-source container developed in 2002 by Steve Lhomme. MKV can hold virtually unlimited video, audio, and subtitle tracks in any codec combination. It has become the de facto standard for high-quality video archival, Blu-ray rips, and anime fansubs due to its flexibility and open specification.
MKV provides features that MOV lacks for many users: multiple subtitle tracks (SRT, ASS, PGS), ordered chapter support, segment linking, and attachment embedding (fonts, cover art). While MOV is tightly integrated with macOS, MKV is the universal choice for cross-platform video libraries managed by Kodi, Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby.
Converting MOV to MKV also allows embedding multiple audio tracks (original language, commentary, alternate mix) that QuickTime's consumer-oriented tools do not expose.
FFmpeg remuxes the MOV content into Matroska's EBML-based container. H.264 and H.265 video streams are typically copied without transcoding since MKV supports these codecs natively. AAC audio is also copied. Additional subtitle tracks can be muxed in during conversion. MKV's cluster-based structure allows chapter markers, tags, and attachments. The conversion preserves the original encoding parameters and bitstream.
When remuxing (stream copy), quality is 100% preserved — the audio and video bitstreams are identical to the MOV source. Only the container structure changes. MKV imposes no quality limitations beyond what the contained codecs support.
