Transport Stream files from digital television multiplex several elementary streams — video, audio, subtitles, and data — into a single packet-based container. Converting TS to M4A extracts the audio portion and wraps it in the MPEG-4 Part 14 audio container, producing AAC-encoded files that integrate natively with iTunes, Apple Music, and every Apple device while supporting rich metadata, chapters, and album art.
M4A is Apple's preferred audio container for AAC content — it is what iTunes Store, Apple Music, and Apple Podcasts use natively. When you need broadcast audio in the Apple ecosystem with proper metadata support, gapless playback, and chapter markers, M4A is the correct format. It also supports ALAC lossless encoding within the same container.
FFmpeg reads the TS stream, identifies audio PIDs through PAT/PMT parsing, and decodes the broadcast audio (MPEG-2 Audio, AC3, or existing AAC). The PCM output is encoded as AAC-LC (or HE-AAC for lower bitrates) and muxed into an M4A container (technically an MP4 file with only audio tracks). If the source is already AAC, the stream can be copied without re-encoding. The M4A container supports iTunes-compatible metadata atoms (udta, ilst) for title, artist, album, and cover art.
At 192-256 kbps AAC-LC, the output is audibly transparent for the vast majority of listeners. The quality ceiling is set by the broadcast source — MPEG-2 Audio at 256 kbps or AC3 at 448 kbps. M4A at equivalent bitrates sounds noticeably better than MP3 due to AAC's superior psychoacoustic model.
