Each time you export from a lossy format like AAC and re-import, you compound compression artifacts — AIFF eliminates this problem entirely.

FFmpeg decodes the AAC-LC audio from the M4R container and writes it as linear PCM (signed 16-bit big-endian) in the AIFF container at 44.1 kHz stereo. The decoding step fully decompresses the AAC data to raw samples, and the AIFF container stores these samples without any further compression. The resulting file uses approximately 10.6 MB per minute of audio at CD quality. For a typical 30-second ringtone, the AIFF output will be about 5.3 MB compared to roughly 480 KB for the M4R source.
The decoded PCM audio is a faithful representation of what the AAC encoder in the M4R file preserved. No additional quality is lost during the conversion to AIFF — the output is the best possible reconstruction of the original audio from the AAC data. However, any compression artifacts introduced during the initial AAC encoding (when the M4R was created) are baked in and cannot be removed. The AIFF output sounds identical to the M4R when played back.
