About MOV to 3GP Conversion
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container format, introduced in 1991 as part of the QuickTime multimedia framework. Modern MOV files typically wrap H.264 or HEVC video with AAC or ALAC audio, and they are the default recording format for every iPhone and Mac since 2007. 3GP is the 3GPP consortium's mobile multimedia format, built for GSM and UMTS networks where bandwidth is limited and devices have minimal processing power.
Why Convert MOV to 3GP?
MOV files from iPhones — particularly those shot in 4K HEVC at 60fps — can reach hundreds of megabytes per minute. 3GP compresses video down to QCIF or CIF resolution at extremely low bitrates, making files small enough for MMS or playback on older feature phones. This conversion is essential when sharing iPhone footage with recipients on basic phones or over networks with severe bandwidth constraints.
Additionally, some legacy mobile CMS platforms and carrier-branded video portals still require 3GP input. Converting MOV ensures compatibility with these systems without requiring the recipient to install third-party software.
Common Use Cases
- Sending iPhone video clips via MMS to recipients on feature phones that only support 3GP playback
- Compressing Mac screen recordings for distribution over low-bandwidth mobile networks in developing regions
- Converting QuickTime-recorded presentations to 3GP for upload to legacy mobile learning platforms
- Creating ultra-small video files from MOV sources for embedding in multimedia SMS campaigns
- Preparing iPhone camera footage for archival on SD cards with very limited storage capacity
How It Works
FFmpeg decodes the MOV container's H.264/HEVC video and AAC audio, then re-encodes for 3GP constraints. Video is transcoded to H.263 or MPEG-4 Simple Profile at QCIF (176x144) or CIF (352x288), typically at 64-384 kbps. Audio is converted from AAC to AMR-NB at 8 kHz mono. The QuickTime atom structure (moov, mdat) is discarded in favor of 3GP's ISO Base Media File Format subset. HEVC requires full decode before re-encoding since 3GP has no HEVC support.
Quality & Performance
Quality loss is substantial when converting from MOV — the resolution drops from 1080p or 4K to 352x288 at most, and bitrate drops from 10-50 Mbps to under 400 kbps. The result is viewable on small phone screens but unsuitable for any quality-critical purpose. If the MOV was shot in HDR (Dolby Vision or HLG), the tone mapping to SDR adds further visual simplification.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Use CIF (352x288) resolution for the best clarity 3GP supports — QCIF is only necessary for the oldest feature phones
- 2Trim the MOV to just the needed clip before converting — iPhone videos can be minutes long but 3GP works best with short clips under 30 seconds
- 3Request AAC audio instead of AMR-NB if your target device supports it for a meaningful quality improvement
- 4For MMS sharing, keep the total 3GP file under 300 KB by limiting duration and using minimum bitrate settings
- 5Convert in batch if you have multiple iPhone clips to send — processing is fast since the output files are tiny
