About MP4 to WMA Conversion

MP4 to WMA conversion extracts the audio track from an MPEG-4 video and encodes it as a Windows Media Audio file. WMA was developed by Microsoft as a competitor to MP3 and AAC, and it remains deeply integrated into the Windows ecosystem. Windows Media Player, Windows Phone (legacy), and many Windows-based car stereo systems use WMA as their preferred audio format.

Our converter decodes the MP4 audio stream and re-encodes it using the WMA v2 codec via FFmpeg. The output is wrapped in the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container with the .wma extension.

Why Convert MP4 to WMA?

WMA conversion serves Windows-centric environments where WMA is the expected format. Some older Windows car stereo head units only support WMA and MP3 for USB playback — AAC files are ignored. Windows Phone devices prioritized WMA for syncing via Zune software. Corporate environments running Windows Media Services for internal streaming may require WMA input. While WMA's relevance has declined, these legacy systems still exist in significant numbers.

Common Use Cases

  • Extract audio for playback on car stereos that only support WMA and MP3
  • Prepare audio content for Windows Media Services streaming infrastructure
  • Create audio files compatible with legacy Windows Phone and Zune devices
  • Convert video audio for Windows-based corporate audio distribution systems
  • Generate WMA files for older portable media players that lack AAC support

How It Works

FFmpeg decodes the MP4 audio and re-encodes using the wmav2 (Windows Media Audio v2) codec. Standard WMA supports bitrates from 32 to 320 kbps at sample rates up to 48 kHz in stereo. The output is containerized in ASF format with .wma extension. WMA v2 is a lossy perceptual codec based on modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT). WMA Pro and WMA Lossless variants exist but have more limited player support.

Quality & Performance

WMA v2 at 128 kbps is roughly comparable to MP3 at 128 kbps — adequate for casual listening but noticeably compressed compared to the source. At 192 kbps and above, quality improves significantly and approaches transparency for most content. WMA handles low bitrates (64-96 kbps) better than MP3 for speech content, making it competitive for voice recordings and podcasts.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use 128-192 kbps for general listening and car audio
  • 2WMA at 64 kbps handles speech well — suitable for audiobooks and podcasts
  • 3Stick with WMA v2 (wmav2) for the widest device compatibility
  • 4Add metadata tags for proper display in Windows Media Player
  • 5If your device supports AAC, prefer it over WMA for better quality per bitrate

At low bitrates (below 128 kbps), WMA sounds slightly better than MP3. At higher bitrates, they are comparable. Both are outperformed by AAC and Opus at all bitrates.
Not natively in modern macOS. VLC plays WMA on Mac, and you can convert WMA to M4A for native playback. Apple dropped WMA support years ago.
Yes. WMA files support embedded album art, artist, album, title, and other metadata through ASF header objects.
WMA (Standard) is lossy at up to 320 kbps. WMA Pro supports multichannel surround at up to 768 kbps. WMA Lossless is bit-perfect compression. Standard WMA has the widest compatibility.
128-192 kbps is the sweet spot for car audio. Road noise masks compression artifacts, so higher bitrates provide little perceptible benefit in a vehicle.
