About MP4 to WMV Conversion
MP4 to WMV conversion transcodes your MPEG-4 video into Windows Media Video format, Microsoft's proprietary video codec and container. WMV was the standard Windows video format throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, deeply integrated into Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, and Microsoft's streaming infrastructure. While its dominance has faded, WMV remains entrenched in corporate environments running Microsoft presentation and training platforms.
Our converter uses FFmpeg to transcode the video to WMV v8 (Windows Media Video 8) or WMV v9 (VC-1) and audio to WMA, producing an ASF-containerized .wmv file.
Why Convert MP4 to WMV?
WMV conversion is necessary when your target platform requires Microsoft's format. PowerPoint 2010 and earlier only embed WMV reliably for in-presentation video. Some corporate training platforms and learning management systems (LMS) only support WMV ingestion. Windows Media Services streaming servers require WMV input. Legacy corporate video archives may be standardized on WMV, requiring new content to match.
Common Use Cases
- Embed video in PowerPoint 2010 and earlier presentations that require WMV
- Upload to corporate LMS platforms that only accept WMV format
- Prepare video for Windows Media Services streaming infrastructure
- Match the format of existing corporate video archives
- Convert for legacy corporate intranet video portals built around Silverlight/WMV
How It Works
FFmpeg transcodes using the msmpeg4v3 (WMV v8) or wmv2 (WMV v9) video codec with WMA v2 audio. WMV v9 (also known as VC-1) is an SMPTE standard that delivers compression efficiency close to early H.264. Typical output resolution is 1280x720 or 1920x1080 at 2-8 Mbps. The ASF container supports DRM (not applied by our converter), multiple bitrate streams for adaptive streaming, and rich metadata. WMV files support interlaced content, which matters for broadcast-origin material.
Quality & Performance
WMV v9 at 4-6 Mbps produces quality comparable to H.264 at 2-3 Mbps. The codec is less efficient than modern alternatives, requiring approximately double the bitrate for equivalent visual quality. At 720p with 4 Mbps, the output looks clean and professional — suitable for presentations and training videos. Fine detail in complex scenes may show more artifacts than H.264 at the same bitrate.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Use WMV v9 for the best quality — it is the most advanced WMV variant
- 2Target 4-6 Mbps at 720p for corporate presentation quality
- 3PowerPoint 2013+ supports MP4 natively — avoid WMV if you have the choice
- 4Include SAMI subtitle tracks if your corporate training content requires captions
- 5Test playback in Windows Media Player, which is the canonical WMV player
