About TS to MKV Conversion

MPEG Transport Stream and Matroska (MKV) are both container formats capable of holding multiple audio, video, and subtitle streams. However, TS is designed for broadcast transmission with 188-byte packet overhead and error correction, while MKV is designed for file-based storage with efficient variable-size EBML framing, chapter support, and virtually unlimited codec flexibility.

Why Convert TS to MKV?

MKV supports everything TS offers — multiple audio tracks, subtitles, metadata — but in a more efficient file-based container without broadcast overhead. MKV files are typically 2-5% smaller than equivalent TS files due to the removal of null packets, PAT/PMT tables, and fixed packet padding. MKV also adds chapter markers, attachments (fonts, thumbnails), and seamless codec switching that TS lacks.

Common Use Cases

  • Archiving DVR recordings in a compact, feature-rich container with chapter markers
  • Preserving multiple audio languages from European DVB broadcasts alongside the video
  • Remuxing IPTV captures for use with Kodi, Plex, or Jellyfin media servers
  • Organizing TV recording collections with MKV's superior metadata and tagging support
  • Converting HLS .ts segments into a single continuous MKV file for offline viewing

How It Works

The converter can often remux TS to MKV without re-encoding — if the source uses H.264 or H.265 video and AAC or AC3 audio, the streams are copied directly into the MKV EBML container. This preserves original quality at maximum speed. MPEG-2 video streams can also be muxed directly into MKV. DVB subtitle streams are converted to SRT or ASS format for MKV subtitle tracks. The output uses Matroska's CUE points for frame-accurate seeking.

Quality & Performance

When remuxing (stream copy), quality is mathematically identical to the source — no re-encoding occurs. If transcoding is needed (e.g., converting MPEG-2 to H.264), quality depends on the chosen bitrate. At equivalent settings, the MKV container itself adds zero quality difference compared to MP4 or any other container.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Choose remux (stream copy) mode whenever possible — it is 10-50x faster than re-encoding and preserves original quality
  • 2Enable subtitle track conversion to include DVB subtitles as SRT tracks in the MKV
  • 3Preserve all audio tracks if your TS has multiple languages — MKV handles multiple tracks gracefully
  • 4Use MKVToolNix after conversion to add chapter markers at episode or segment boundaries
  • 5Set the default audio track language tag so media players automatically select the right language

TS to MKV conversion preserves all broadcast content in a more efficient, feature-rich container — ideal for media server libraries and long-term archival of TV recordings.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Yes — if the codec streams are compatible (H.264, H.265, AC3, AAC), the converter remuxes without re-encoding. The video and audio data is bit-identical to the source.
Yes — MKV supports unlimited audio tracks. All language streams from the TS are preserved and properly labeled with language tags for easy selection in media players.
DVB bitmap subtitles can be converted to SRT (text) or kept as bitmap tracks in MKV. SRT conversion provides the best compatibility across media players and allows searching/editing.
Remuxing typically reduces file size by 2-5% due to the removal of TS broadcast overhead (null packets, PAT/PMT tables, PCR padding). The actual media data remains unchanged.
MKV natively supports chapter markers, but TS broadcast files typically do not contain chapter information. You can add chapters manually using MKVToolNix after conversion.
VLC, MPV, PotPlayer, Kodi, Plex, and Jellyfin all handle MKV excellently. Windows 10/11 plays MKV natively in the built-in Movies & TV app. macOS needs IINA, VLC, or similar.
