Converting M4A to AIFF decodes the compressed audio (AAC or ALAC) inside the M4A container and writes it as uncompressed PCM in Apple's AIFF format. AIFF stores raw audio samples in big-endian byte order with no compression, making it the standard working format for macOS audio production. This conversion is essential when importing iTunes or Apple Music files into professional DAWs that require uncompressed input for editing, processing, or mastering.
Professional audio workflows in Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and Ableton Live on macOS often prefer AIFF as the working format because uncompressed PCM avoids any CPU overhead from real-time decoding during playback and recording. AIFF is also required for some CD mastering software, broadcast audio delivery, and archival standards that mandate uncompressed format. If you have an M4A library and need to bring tracks into a production environment, AIFF is the standard target.
FFmpeg decodes the M4A's AAC (lossy) or ALAC (lossless) audio to PCM samples, then writes them into an AIFF container. AIFF uses the IFF chunk structure: a COMM chunk defines sample rate, bit depth, and channel count; an SSND chunk contains the actual PCM data. The output is big-endian PCM (the native byte order for AIFF). Standard bit depths are 16-bit (CD quality) and 24-bit (professional studio quality). Sample rate is preserved from the source.
If the M4A contains ALAC, the AIFF output is lossless — bit-identical PCM. If the M4A contains AAC (lossy), the AIFF faithfully represents the decoded AAC audio but cannot recover information lost during AAC encoding. Converting lossy AAC to uncompressed AIFF does not improve quality — it just changes the container while inflating file size.
