AVCHD camcorders record audio as either Dolby AC3 surround sound or 16-bit LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation). AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) stores uncompressed PCM audio and is the native professional audio format on macOS. Converting MTS to AIFF extracts the camcorder soundtrack into a lossless, editing-ready format for Apple's production tools.
When importing camcorder audio into Logic Pro, GarageBand, or Final Cut Pro's audio timeline, AIFF is the preferred format because it is macOS's native uncompressed audio container. Audio engineers working with event recordings, nature documentaries, or music performances captured on AVCHD camcorders need an uncompressed extraction that preserves every bit of the recorded audio for mixing, effects processing, and mastering.
If the MTS source contains LPCM audio, the extraction to AIFF is truly lossless — a bit-perfect copy. For AC3 sources, the decoded audio is preserved at full PCM resolution, providing the best possible starting point for further processing without accumulating lossy compression artifacts.
FFmpeg discards the video and decodes audio to PCM in an AIFF container: `-vn -c:a pcm_s16be -ar 48000 -ac 2`. AIFF uses big-endian PCM (pcm_s16be), unlike WAV's little-endian. AVCHD records at 48 kHz natively, so preserve that rate. For 5.1 AC3 sources, add downmix: `-ac 2 -af aresample=matrix_encoding=dplii` for Dolby Pro Logic II compatible stereo.
AIFF is uncompressed PCM — no information is lost during the AIFF encoding step. If the MTS source has LPCM audio, the extraction is bit-perfect. If the source is AC3, the AIFF file preserves the fully decoded AC3 audio without additional loss. File sizes are approximately 34 MB per minute for stereo 48 kHz 16-bit audio.
