About M2TS to FLAC Conversion

M2TS containers from Blu-ray discs hold some of the highest-quality consumer audio available — DTS-HD Master Audio at lossless rates, Dolby TrueHD at lossless quality, LPCM at 24-bit/96 kHz, or standard AC3 at 640 kbps. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is the universal open-source standard for lossless audio archiving. Converting M2TS to FLAC extracts and preserves this high-fidelity audio in a format that is supported on every platform.

Why Convert M2TS to FLAC?

Blu-ray M2TS files contain some of the best audio available in consumer media. Extracting to FLAC preserves this quality losslessly while reducing storage compared to raw PCM. FLAC is supported on Linux, Windows (natively since Windows 10), Android, macOS (via most players), and by every major media server. It is the gold standard for audio archiving and the format of choice for audiophile communities worldwide.

Common Use Cases

  • Archiving film scores from Blu-ray collections as high-quality lossless FLAC audio
  • Extracting DTS-HD Master Audio tracks from Blu-ray for audiophile music listening
  • Building a lossless soundtrack library from Blu-ray movie collections
  • Preserving concert recordings from Blu-ray live performance discs in the highest quality
  • Creating reference audio files from Blu-ray for home theater calibration

How It Works

FFmpeg reads the M2TS transport stream and decodes the audio track (AC3, DTS, DTS-HD MA, TrueHD, or LPCM) to PCM. The PCM data is then compressed using the FLAC encoder with configurable compression level (0-8). For LPCM and lossless codec sources (DTS-HD MA, TrueHD), the FLAC output is a perfect preservation of the original master audio. For lossy sources (AC3, core DTS), FLAC captures the fully decoded audio losslessly. Multi-channel layouts (5.1, 7.1) are supported natively by FLAC.

Quality & Performance

FLAC is lossless — the decoded audio is bit-identical to the PCM input. From lossless M2TS tracks (LPCM, DTS-HD MA, TrueHD), you get a perfect copy of the studio master. From lossy AC3/DTS, you get a perfect copy of the decoded lossy audio. No quality is ever lost in FLAC encoding or decoding, regardless of how many times the file is processed.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Always extract from the highest-quality audio track available — DTS-HD MA and TrueHD are lossless and produce the best FLAC output.
  • 2Use FLAC compression level 5 (default) — higher levels save only 1-3% more space with significantly longer encoding times.
  • 3Preserve multi-channel layouts (5.1/7.1) if you have a surround sound system — FLAC handles all channel configurations.
  • 4Add metadata tags (movie title, composer, year) to the FLAC files for proper library organization in music players.
  • 5Use ReplayGain tags to normalize volume across FLAC files from different Blu-ray sources without modifying the audio data.

FLAC preserves the fully decoded PCM output of DTS-HD MA, which is lossless. The result is bit-identical to the original studio master (assuming the DTS-HD MA encoding was itself lossless, which it is by definition).
A 2-hour stereo FLAC at 24-bit/48 kHz is about 800 MB-1.2 GB. 5.1 surround at the same spec is about 2-3.5 GB. Compression ratio is typically 40-60% of uncompressed PCM.
Yes. FLAC supports up to 8 channels. Blu-ray 7.1 TrueHD or DTS-HD MA can be extracted to 7.1 FLAC without any channel reduction.
Both preserve identical audio quality. FLAC is 40-60% smaller due to lossless compression. FLAC also supports metadata tags (artist, album, etc.) that WAV handles poorly. For archiving, FLAC is superior.
For the best quality, extract the highest-quality track — typically DTS-HD MA or TrueHD over standard AC3. Check the Blu-ray's audio specifications to identify the best track.
