About M2TS to MOV Conversion

M2TS from Blu-ray and AVCHD wraps H.264/H.265 video with AC3/DTS/LPCM audio in MPEG-2 Transport Stream packets. MOV (QuickTime Movie) is Apple's native video container, the standard for professional video editing on macOS. MOV supports H.264, H.265, ProRes, and every Apple codec alongside AAC, ALAC, and PCM audio. Converting M2TS to MOV brings high-definition content into Apple's professional video pipeline.

Why Convert M2TS to MOV?

MOV is the required or preferred container for Final Cut Pro, Motion, Compressor, DaVinci Resolve on Mac, and many broadcast delivery specifications. AVCHD camcorder footage in M2TS can be difficult to work with in timeline editors due to the transport stream's sequential structure — MOV's random-access design provides faster seeking and smoother editing. ProRes encoding in MOV gives you the ideal editing codec for professional post-production.

Common Use Cases

  • Importing AVCHD camcorder footage into Final Cut Pro for professional video editing
  • Converting Blu-ray content to ProRes MOV for color grading in DaVinci Resolve
  • Preparing M2TS recordings for broadcast delivery specifications that require ProRes MOV
  • Converting AVCHD wedding footage for editing in Final Cut Pro with full timeline performance
  • Making Blu-ray content compatible with Apple Motion for graphics and effects compositing

How It Works

FFmpeg can either remux (stream copy H.264/AAC) or re-encode (to ProRes + PCM) into the MOV container. Remuxing is fast and lossless but keeps the original codecs. For professional editing, re-encoding to ProRes 422 (147 Mbps at 1080p) or ProRes 422 LT (102 Mbps) provides optimal timeline editing performance in Final Cut Pro. Audio can be transcoded from AC3/DTS to PCM (for editing) or AAC (for delivery). The MOV container supports timecode tracks, chapter markers, and Apple-specific metadata.

Quality & Performance

Remuxing is lossless — identical to the M2TS source. ProRes encoding actually provides better per-frame quality than the H.264 in the M2TS, as ProRes is designed for editing headroom. ProRes 422 at 147 Mbps for 1080p preserves far more detail than the source H.264 at 20-28 Mbps, though the file sizes are substantially larger.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use ProRes 422 LT for day-to-day editing — it provides excellent quality at about 70% the file size of standard ProRes 422.
  • 2Remux with stream copy for the fastest conversion when you just need macOS compatibility without re-encoding.
  • 3For Final Cut Pro, ProRes 422 is the ideal codec — it eliminates decode overhead and provides real-time multi-stream editing.
  • 4Set audio to PCM 24-bit/48 kHz for editing workflows — this avoids any audio transcoding artifacts.
  • 5If disk space is limited, ProRes Proxy (about 45 Mbps at 1080p) is usable for offline editing with Final Cut Pro's optimized media workflow.

Remux for quick viewing or casual editing. Encode to ProRes 422 for professional editing, color grading, and broadcast delivery. ProRes provides dramatically better editing performance.
Much larger. ProRes 422 at 1080p uses about 147 Mbps (1.1 GB per minute). A 1-hour M2TS at 20 Mbps (150 MB per minute) becomes about 66 GB as ProRes 422. ProRes 422 LT is about 30% smaller.
Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve on Windows handle MOV well. Windows Media Player may need codecs for ProRes. For Windows-native editing, AVI or MXF may be preferred.
Basic technical metadata transfers. AVCHD-specific metadata (scene markers, camera model data from the AVCHD directory structure) is not automatically embedded in MOV.
Yes. ProRes supports up to 8K. ProRes 422 at 4K uses about 589 Mbps (4.4 GB per minute). Ensure you have sufficient storage — a 2-hour 4K ProRes film requires about 528 GB.
