WAVE (.wave) is functionally identical to WAV — both use the RIFF container with uncompressed PCM audio data. Some operating systems and software prefer the .wave extension over .wav, particularly on Unix-like systems and certain European audio tools. Converting WAVE to 3GP dramatically compresses the audio into AMR-NB or low-bitrate AAC inside a 3GPP container designed for mobile telephony.
The conversion takes uncompressed audio that may be 10 MB per minute at CD quality and produces files as small as 90 KB per minute in AMR-NB. This extreme compression is appropriate when targeting legacy feature phones or telephony-based audio delivery systems where bandwidth and storage are severely constrained.
3GP remains relevant in regions where feature phones dominate the mobile landscape and MMS is the primary way to share audio. If you have WAVE recordings from studio sessions, field recordings, or voice captures that need to reach audiences on basic mobile devices, 3GP provides the most universally compatible mobile audio format.
Telephony and IVR systems often accept 3GP as an input format for hold music, automated messages, and menu prompts. Converting from WAVE to 3GP allows professional-quality recordings to be deployed in these low-bandwidth systems without intermediate format steps.
FFmpeg reads the WAVE file's RIFF header to determine PCM format (bit depth, sample rate, channels) and decodes the raw audio. For 3GP output, it re-encodes to either AMR-NB (8 kHz mono, 4.75-12.2 kbps) or AAC-LC at low bitrate inside a 3GP container. The massive bitrate reduction — from 1,411 kbps (CD-quality WAV) to 12.2 kbps (AMR-NB) — represents over 99% compression. Channel count is reduced to mono for AMR-NB.
Quality loss is substantial. WAVE files store the full uncompressed audio signal, while AMR-NB at 12.2 kbps produces telephone-quality speech. For spoken word this is acceptable — voices remain clearly intelligible. For music, AMR-NB introduces severe artifacts. Using AAC at 32-64 kbps inside 3GP provides noticeably better quality for music content while remaining compatible with modern 3GP-capable devices.

WAVE to 3GP serves mobile telephony and feature phone distribution where extreme compression is necessary. Use AAC inside 3GP rather than AMR-NB whenever music content or higher fidelity is needed.
