About MOV to FLV Conversion

MOV from Apple's QuickTime ecosystem uses modern codecs like H.264 and HEVC within a sophisticated atom-based container. FLV (Flash Video) was the dominant web video format from 2005 to 2015, used by YouTube, Twitch, and millions of Flash-embedded websites. FLV wraps Sorenson Spark (H.263), VP6, or H.264 video with MP3, AAC, or Speex audio inside Adobe's proprietary container.

Why Convert MOV to FLV?

Despite Flash Player reaching end-of-life in December 2020, FLV remains relevant for legacy content management systems, streaming servers running older versions of Adobe Media Server or Wowza, and archival workflows that require FLV format. Some RTMP-based live streaming setups still accept FLV input for ingest.

Converting MOV to FLV is also needed when working with Flash-based educational platforms and interactive training systems that have not been migrated to HTML5.

Common Use Cases

  • Preparing iPhone video for upload to legacy content management systems that only accept FLV
  • Creating FLV content for RTMP live streaming ingest servers that require Flash Video input
  • Converting QuickTime recordings for Flash-based e-learning platforms still in operation
  • Archiving MOV content in FLV format for compatibility with historical video libraries
  • Producing FLV files from MOV sources for integration with older Wowza or Red5 streaming servers

How It Works

FFmpeg remuxes or transcodes MOV content into the FLV container. When the source MOV contains H.264 video and AAC audio, these can be directly placed into FLV without re-encoding since FLV supports both codecs. HEVC must be transcoded to H.264 as FLV has no HEVC support. Audio must be AAC, MP3, or Speex — other codecs are transcoded. FLV uses a simple tag-based structure with script, audio, and video tags marked by timestamps.

Quality & Performance

When H.264 and AAC streams are copied from MOV to FLV, quality is preserved exactly. HEVC-to-H.264 transcoding introduces a single generation of re-encoding. FLV supports up to 1080p resolution but lacks support for HDR, 4K, and modern metadata — these features are lost during conversion.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use stream copy mode when the MOV contains H.264 + AAC for zero quality loss and instant conversion
  • 2Downscale to 720p or 1080p — FLV players and servers rarely handle higher resolutions properly
  • 3If the target system requires VP6 or Sorenson Spark codec, specify it explicitly as these are the classic FLV codecs
  • 4Add proper FLV metadata (duration, width, height, framerate) using the -flvflags add_keyframe_index option
  • 5Test the FLV output with VLC before deploying to production streaming servers

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Yes. FLV supports H.264 video and AAC audio — the same codecs used in most MOV files. When these match, the conversion is a fast remux with zero quality loss.
Legacy systems. Many enterprise streaming servers, educational platforms, and content management systems built during the Flash era still require FLV input and have not been migrated.
FLV technically has no resolution limit, but the format was designed for web delivery at 480p-1080p. Most FLV players and servers do not handle 4K well. Downscale to 1080p.
Yes. FLV is the native container for RTMP streaming. The converted file can be ingested by RTMP servers like Nginx-RTMP, Wowza, or legacy Adobe Media Server.
Not natively — Flash Player was removed from all browsers in 2021. FLV requires standalone players like VLC, PotPlayer, or the Ruffle Flash emulator for web playback.
