About WMV to AVI Conversion

How It Works

If H.264-in-AVI is acceptable (some players support it), a remux is possible when the WMV contains H.264. AVI's RIFF structure has a 2 GB file size limit in the original spec, extended to 256 GB with AVI 2.0/OpenDML.
Quality & Performance
When re-encoding to MPEG-4 Part 2, quality depends on the target bitrate — at 2–4 Mbps, it is comparable to the original WMV. When encoding to H.264, quality typically improves versus VC-1 at the same bitrate. If the WMV has high bitrate VC-1, match or exceed that bitrate in the AVI output to avoid visible quality loss.
