AIF (Audio Interchange File Format) is a short-extension variant of AIFF, developed by Apple in 1988 and based on Electronic Arts' Interchange File Format (IFF). AIF stores uncompressed PCM audio in big-endian byte order, making it the Mac-native counterpart to Microsoft's little-endian WAV format. The .aif extension emerged as a three-character alternative to .aiff for compatibility with classic Mac OS and early Windows file systems that preferred 8.3 naming conventions.
3GP is a lightweight multimedia container standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for mobile phone networks. Converting AIF to 3GP transcodes studio-quality uncompressed PCM audio into a constrained mobile format using AMR or low-bitrate AAC codecs. The resulting file will be audio-only wrapped in the 3GP video container, suitable for legacy mobile playback and MMS delivery.
AIF files are far too large and use a format unrecognized by most mobile phones, especially older feature phones that expect 3GP containers. A single minute of CD-quality AIF occupies roughly 10 MB of uncompressed PCM, while a 3GP equivalent at AMR-NB uses under 100 KB. This massive size reduction is essential for MMS gateways and 3G network delivery.
Because AIF stores lossless uncompressed audio, converting to 3GP benefits from the highest possible source quality. Unlike re-encoding from MP3 or AAC (which introduces generation loss), AIF-to-3GP produces a single lossy encoding pass from perfect PCM data, yielding the best achievable quality within 3GP's constrained codecs.
FFmpeg reads the AIF container, identifies the big-endian PCM stream (typically pcm_s16be at 44.1 kHz stereo), and decodes it to raw PCM samples. It then encodes to AMR-NB (8 kHz mono, 4.75-12.2 kbps), AMR-WB (16 kHz mono, up to 23.85 kbps), or AAC-LC at a low bitrate, and wraps the result in a 3GP container. The big-endian byte order in AIF is handled transparently by FFmpeg's decoder — there is no quality penalty compared to little-endian WAV sources.
AIF's uncompressed PCM provides the best possible starting point, but 3GP's codecs impose severe quality constraints. AMR-NB compresses to narrowband telephone quality (300-3400 Hz), losing all high-frequency content. AMR-WB extends to 7 kHz but remains below AM radio quality. AAC-LC at 64-128 kbps in 3GP offers the best fidelity for music content. The quality loss from AIF to 3GP is substantial and irreversible.
