MKV files leverage the Matroska container's ability to hold virtually any codec combination, but 3GP remains the go-to format for legacy mobile phones that predate smartphone-era hardware decoders. Converting MKV to 3GP strips away the multi-track complexity and repackages video into a lightweight container that even feature phones from the mid-2000s can play back without stuttering.
The primary reason to convert MKV to 3GP is backward compatibility with older mobile handsets. Devices running Symbian, early Android 2.x, or basic Java-based firmware rely on the 3GPP standard because their chipsets only decode H.263 or early MPEG-4 Part 2 video at QCIF or QVGA resolutions. An MKV file encoded with H.265 or VP9 would simply fail to open on these devices.
Beyond hardware limitations, 3GP files are dramatically smaller than their MKV counterparts, which matters when transferring video over 2G or EDGE networks still common in parts of South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and rural Latin America. Carrier MMS gateways also enforce strict size limits (often 300 KB to 1 MB), and 3GP compression makes it possible to send short video clips through MMS where attaching an MKV would be rejected outright.
FFmpeg transcodes the MKV source by decoding whatever video codec it contains (H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, etc.) and re-encoding into H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 at a low resolution (typically 176x144 or 320x240). Audio tracks are re-encoded to AMR-NB at 8 kHz mono. If the MKV has multiple audio or subtitle tracks, only the default audio stream is carried over since 3GP does not support embedded subtitles or multiple audio channels.
Expect a significant reduction in visual quality. 3GP targets bitrates between 60 and 200 kbps for video, which means fine detail, sharp edges, and fast motion will exhibit noticeable blocking artifacts. Audio compressed to AMR-NB sounds tinny compared to the original Opus or AAC tracks in the MKV. This conversion is about functional playback on constrained devices, not preserving fidelity.
