PostScript defines printed page content through a vector programming language with mathematical precision for curves, text, and images. PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, supporting multiple layers, channels, masks, blending modes, smart objects, and non-destructive editing. PSD is the professional standard for raster image editing and compositing.
Converting PS to PSD rasterizes PostScript page content into a Photoshop-editable format, enabling professional image editing, retouching, and compositing workflows. This conversion is used when PostScript artwork needs to enter Photoshop-based production pipelines for enhancement, manipulation, or integration into multi-layer design compositions.
Professional designers and retouchers work in Photoshop for raster image manipulation — color correction, retouching, compositing, effects, and filter application. When PostScript artwork, illustrations, or page layouts need these kinds of modifications, converting to PSD opens the full Photoshop toolset. PostScript files cannot be directly opened in Photoshop with editable layers.
PSD conversion also enables PostScript content to be integrated into layered design compositions. A PostScript illustration can become a layer in a multi-layer PSD file alongside photographs, textures, and type treatments. This workflow is standard in advertising, packaging, and editorial design where PostScript technical art is combined with photographic elements.
Ghostscript interprets the PostScript program, rendering all vector operations, text, and images into a rasterized bitmap at the specified resolution. The rasterized output is then saved in PSD format as a flattened image layer. The PSD file includes an ICC color profile (sRGB by default), supports 8-bit and 16-bit color depth per channel, and stores the image data with RLE (Run Length Encoding) compression. The PSD is compatible with Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Photopea. PostScript CMYK content can be preserved as a CMYK PSD or converted to RGB depending on the intended workflow.
The PSD output faithfully represents the Ghostscript rendering of the PostScript content at the specified resolution. At 300 DPI, vector text and line art render with excellent sharpness. Color fidelity depends on the color space conversion: preserving CMYK produces the most accurate results for print-destined content, while converting to RGB is appropriate for screen-based workflows. The PSD is a flattened single layer — the PostScript's conceptual "layers" (separate drawing operations) are not preserved as PSD layers. For multi-layer output, additional layer separation must be done manually in Photoshop.

PS-to-PSD conversion brings PostScript content into Photoshop's professional editing environment, enabling raster manipulation, compositing, and enhancement that the PostScript format itself cannot provide.
