RM (RealMedia) is the proprietary streaming format from RealNetworks, using RealVideo codecs (RV10/RV20/RV30) and RealAudio optimized for dial-up internet in the late 1990s. Files are typically 176x144 to 320x240 at 100-300 kbps. The iPad Video device preset produces H.264 Main Profile video with AAC-LC audio for Apple's iPad Retina display.
Displaying dial-up-era RM content on an iPad Retina screen exposes the extreme quality limitations of the source material. The content is preserved faithfully, but the iPad's high-resolution display makes the low-resolution, heavily-compressed original painfully apparent. This conversion is primarily for archival access and historical interest rather than quality viewing.
iPadOS cannot play RM files — the RealMedia container and RealVideo codecs are completely unsupported. The iPad preset converts to H.264 Main Profile MP4 that plays natively in the Files app and all video players on iPad. Even though the source quality is low, the conversion ensures the content is accessible on Apple hardware.
For researchers, archivists, and anyone with historical RM content they need to access on iPad, this conversion provides the only path to playback. University media archives, early internet cultural content, and personal RealPlayer libraries become viewable on modern Apple hardware.
FFmpeg demuxes the RM container, decodes the RealVideo stream, and re-encodes to H.264 Main Profile at the source resolution (typically 176x144 to 320x240). Audio is decoded from RealAudio and re-encoded to AAC-LC at 64-96 kbps. Video bitrate targets 200-500 kbps. The MP4 output includes faststart. No upscaling is applied since the source resolution is far below iPad's display capabilities.
RM source quality is inherently poor — dial-up-era encoding at 100-300 kbps produced blocky, low-frame-rate video. On the iPad's Retina display, this is starkly visible. The conversion faithfully preserves the source quality without additional degradation, but it cannot improve upon the original encoding. Files are tiny at 5-20 MB per clip.
