SWF (Shockwave Flash) is Adobe's discontinued multimedia format. AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a voice-optimized audio codec originally developed for GSM cellular networks, encoding speech at very low bitrates (4.75-12.2 kbps). Converting SWF to AMR extracts audio from Flash files and encodes it as a compact voice file suitable for mobile telephony, MMS messages, and devices optimized for speech rather than music playback.
AMR was designed specifically for human speech, using a codec tuned to the frequency range and patterns of spoken language. For Flash e-learning narrations, voice messages, and spoken-word content, AMR produces extremely small files while maintaining intelligible speech quality.
AMR files are ideal when Flash audio content consists of speech and the target is mobile distribution with minimal file size. Voice-over narrations from Flash training modules, recorded lectures, and instructional content convert to AMR at a fraction of the size of MP3 or AAC, making them suitable for transmission over slow mobile networks and storage on devices with limited capacity.
Feature phones and basic smartphones in many regions support AMR as a native audio format. For organizations distributing audio content to audiences using basic mobile devices, AMR is the most widely supported low-bitrate voice format.
The conversion engine uses FFmpeg to extract audio from the SWF container, decode it from the Flash audio format, resample to 8 kHz mono (the AMR standard), and encode using the AMR-NB (Narrow Band) codec at the default 12.2 kbps bitrate. The output is an AMR file with the standard #!AMR header. Audio bandwidth is limited to 300-3400 Hz, matching the telephony speech band.
AMR is optimized for speech intelligibility, not music fidelity. Voice content converts with good clarity at extremely small file sizes. Music, sound effects, and complex audio will sound noticeably degraded due to the narrow frequency band and low bitrate. A one-minute AMR file is approximately 95 KB — roughly 1/15th the size of an equivalent MP3 file. Use AMR only for voice content where compact size is the priority.
