Without converting to the PSP's specific requirements, the device will display an 'unsupported data' error.

Firmware 2.0+ supports H.264 Baseline level 1.3 (320x240). Firmware 3.30+ supports level 3.0 (720x480). For the standard 480x272 resolution, firmware 2.71+ is required.

The PSP is very strict about encoding parameters. Ensure Baseline profile (not Main or High), CAVLC entropy coding, no B-frames, and bitrate within limits. The file must also use the correct naming convention.

768 kbps for firmware 2.x, up to 2 Mbps for firmware 5.x. Using bitrates above what your firmware version supports will cause playback failure.

Firmware 3.30+ supports 720x480 decoding, which the PSP downscales to its native 480x272 display. This can look slightly better due to downsampling. File sizes increase accordingly.

A 1-hour video at 480x272/768kbps is approximately 350 MB. A 2GB Memory Stick Duo holds about 5.5 hours, while an 8GB Memory Stick fits about 22 hours of video.

The PSP does not display embedded subtitle tracks. Subtitles must be hardcoded (burned into the video frames) during conversion to be visible.
