About MPEG files
MPEG files (.mpeg or .mpg) usually hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video. They come from DVD-era camcorders, TV capture cards and older editing software.
MPEG-2 needs a high bitrate for good quality, so these files are big. MP4 with H.264 gives a similar picture at a much smaller size and plays on current devices.
How we convert MPEG to MP4
- Always re-encoded
- The MPEG video is re-encoded to H.264 High profile at CRF 23.
- Audio
- MP2 or other audio is converted to AAC at 192 kbps.
- Resolution and frame rate
- Kept from the source unless you pick new values.
- Presets
- Choose High (CRF 18) for archiving, or Low (CRF 28) for a small file to share.
Common problems and fixes
The picture has comb-like lines on moving edges.
TV and camcorder captures are often interlaced. The conversion keeps the original frames, so play the MP4 in a player with deinterlacing turned on.
The file from the capture card does not convert.
Captures that stopped abruptly can be damaged at the end. Try another copy or a shorter part of the recording.
I need the result much smaller.
Pick the Low preset. MPEG-2 sources usually shrink a lot when turned into H.264.
About MPEG to MP4 Conversion
MPEG formats dominated video from the 1990s through the DVD era. MPEG-1 powered Video CDs, MPEG-2 powered DVDs and broadcast TV. While these formats still work, modern devices and platforms expect MP4 with H.264. Converting MPEG to MP4 brings classic video into the universal playback ecosystem.
The conversion transcodes older MPEG codecs to efficient H.264, typically producing smaller files with equivalent or better visual quality. Your VCD collections, DVD backups, and captured broadcast content become portable, editable, and universally compatible.
Why Convert MPEG to MP4?
Modern compression efficiency. H.264 produces 50-70% smaller files than MPEG-2 at equivalent quality. Your converted videos are lighter and load faster.
Universal device playback. While computers can still play MPEG, many smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs prefer or require H.264/MP4. Converting ensures playback everywhere.
Editing and platform compatibility. Video editors and upload platforms work better with MP4. Converting before editing or uploading streamlines your workflow.
