Converting MP1 to ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) decodes the legacy MPEG Audio Layer 1 bitstream and compresses the resulting PCM audio losslessly into Apple's ecosystem format. ALAC provides 40-60% compression over uncompressed AIFF/WAV while enabling bit-perfect reconstruction of the decoded audio.
This conversion is useful for archiving MP1 content from VCD or DAB sources within the Apple ecosystem. While ALAC cannot restore quality lost during MP1 encoding, it ensures no additional degradation occurs and stores the decoded audio efficiently.
If you want to preserve the maximum recoverable quality from MP1 sources while using Apple devices, ALAC is the optimal format. It compresses the decoded audio losslessly and plays natively on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and in iTunes/Music. Converting to ALAC is a one-time decode that preserves everything the MP1 contained.
ALAC also serves as a better intermediate format than AIFF or WAV for further conversion — it is smaller while being equally lossless. From ALAC, you can later encode to any lossy format without re-decoding the original MP1.
FFmpeg decodes the MP1 subband audio to PCM, then encodes to ALAC using linear prediction and entropy coding within an M4A container. ALAC compresses the decoded PCM by 40-60% depending on audio complexity. The ALAC output can be decoded back to produce PCM that is bit-identical to what FFmpeg's MP1 decoder produced. Standard output is 16-bit/44.1 kHz for CD-quality MP1 sources.
Lossless relative to the decoded MP1 audio. ALAC preserves every sample from the MP1 decode without any additional degradation. However, the audio quality is still limited by the MP1 source — compression artifacts from the original MP1 encoding are preserved as-is. This is the maximum quality extractable from an MP1 file.
