The output is wrapped in an M4A container (MPEG-4 Part 14) with the ALAC codec tag, which all Apple software recognizes natively.
ALAC is mathematically lossless — the decoded audio is sample-identical to the uncompressed PCM output from the broadcast decoder. Quality is limited only by the original broadcast encoding (typically MPEG-2 Audio at 192-384 kbps or AC3 at 448 kbps). The ALAC file perfectly preserves whatever fidelity the broadcast provided.
