SRW is Samsung's proprietary RAW format from the NX-series mirrorless camera system, including models like the NX1, NX500, NX300, NX30, and NX3000. These cameras featured 14-bit APS-C sensors producing SRW files with Samsung's unique color rendering. Samsung discontinued its camera division in 2015, making SRW a legacy format with a finite but significant archive of images held by NX system photographers worldwide.
Converting SRW to BMP produces an uncompressed bitmap from these Samsung RAW files. Because Samsung no longer updates camera software and third-party RAW support for SRW is increasingly sparse, converting to universal formats like BMP ensures these images remain accessible long-term. BMP's simplicity guarantees readability on any system, regardless of future software changes.
Samsung's exit from the camera market means SRW support in RAW processors is not guaranteed long-term. While Lightroom and Capture One currently support SRW, future versions may deprecate it. Converting to BMP creates a permanent, universally readable copy of the image data.
Legacy systems, industrial equipment, and scientific instruments that require uncompressed BMP cannot read SRW files. For Samsung NX photographers needing to deliver images to these systems, BMP conversion is necessary.
The conversion reads the SRW container, extracts 14-bit Bayer sensor data from the Samsung APS-C sensor, and performs demosaicing. Samsung's color matrix and white balance metadata are applied. The output is written as a 24-bit Windows DIB. The NX1 (28.2 MP) produces a BMP of approximately 81 MB. The NX500 (28.2 MP) produces similarly sized output.
BMP applies zero compression — the format step is completely lossless. Samsung's 14-bit sensors captured excellent detail for their era. The main quality consideration is the demosaicing algorithm applied to the Bayer data. Since Samsung no longer updates their color science, the conversion uses standard demosaicing with Samsung's embedded color matrix.
